Ten metres down, in the shell of the old Cinema Trevi, sits an imperial-era house and the castellum aquae of the Aqua Virgo — the tank that split the flow of the aqueduct Agrippa commissioned in 19 BC and which still supplies the fountain above. Finds from the dig are displayed on site, including a marble head of Alexander Helios.

The guided visit reads the layers as a record of the city's bad days: Nero's fire in 64 AD, the sack by Alaric, the Gothic siege that severed most of Rome's aqueducts and left this one, being underground, intact.

The listing includes an official access ticket to the Trevi Fountain inner perimeter — the managed area at the basin rather than the crush on the steps behind it. The operator is candid in its own small print that the fountain gets very crowded, and notes you will still have the chance to visit it afterwards.

That inclusion is the whole case for this tour over the express version, which covers the underground in forty minutes and stops there. Whether managed access to a fountain is worth the difference is a personal call — but the aqueduct below and the basin above are the same piece of engineering, and seeing them in sequence is the point.

Timing

Vicus Caprarius opens Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 17:00, and closes on Mondays — the same day San Sebastiano and Priscilla shut. An hour-long tour that ends by late afternoon leaves the evening free, and the Trevi at dusk is a different fountain from the Trevi at noon.

It sits within a ten-minute walk of the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, so it slots into a centre day without transport. That is unusual among the undergrounds on this site — most of the others are either at the Colosseum or eight kilometres south on the Appian Way.

Doing it on your own instead

Vicus Caprarius sells its own tickets at €4, with €2.50 for Roma Pass holders and free entry under 14 — one of the very few Rome undergrounds where a city pass buys anything at all. Booking is obligatory at weekends and on holidays, by phone or WhatsApp on +39 339 7786192, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00.

So the site is cheap and reachable without a tour. What this listing sells is a guide, a reserved slot and the fountain access. If you are comfortable arranging a small booking in Italian, go direct and put the difference toward a catacomb.
