The operator lists it as: "Access into the Colosseum's Underground dungeons OR arena floor (you must select which option between the Underground OR arena floor)." Capitals theirs. That is unusually clear for a Colosseum listing — the $177 exclusive tour buries the same choice in its title — and it means the decision is yours at checkout, not a surprise at the gate.

Only the $386 small-group tour includes both levels. If budget is finite, pick one here and put the difference toward the Domus Aurea or a catacomb.

The other two sites

Entry to the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill is included, along with access to rooms in the imperial palace on the hill — the part most visitors walk past because it is unmarked from the path. Entry to the Colosseum is through the guides' entrance rather than the general queue.

For a newcomer this is the right shape. The Forum is where Rome governed itself and the Palatine is where it was ruled from; the arena makes far more sense after both than before them.

Guide or audio guide

Two formats are sold and the difference is significant: the audio-guide option explicitly does not include a live guide. Since an authorised guide is what grants access to the arena floor and the underground in the first place, check carefully which option you are selecting if a special-access level is the reason you are booking.

Limited tickets, moving start times

The operator states it directly: because tickets to the underground are extremely limited, they are hard to secure close to the date, and the tour start time may change — with notice by email or phone if it does. That is not an operator hedging; the Parco archeologico del Colosseo caps special-access numbers and releases them in batches.

In practice: book weeks out for spring and autumn dates, and treat any same-week underground availability as luck. If you only find arena-floor slots, that is why.

When the underground closes anyway

Even a confirmed booking can lose the hypogeum: it shuts at short notice for works or weather and the tour continues above ground. Reviewers of comparable tours have described exactly that and still rated the day highly, because the guiding carries it — but if the basement is your whole reason for going, ask the operator what happens in that case.

First visit or second

On a first visit to Rome, book this and pick whichever level appeals. On a second visit, when the Forum and Palatine are already behind you, the calculation flips and the both-levels tour starts to make sense despite the price.

And if what you want is an underground that feels underground — quiet, enclosed, old — the catacombs do that far better than the hypogeum, which is open to the sky in places and hot in August.
