A church you can stand in

Every other catacomb in Rome is corridors — narrow galleries with burial niches cut into both walls, a guide in front and the group behind. Domitilla has those too, twenty kilometres of them. What it also has is a fourth-century basilica built into the hillside, half below ground, dedicated to the martyrs Nereus and Achilleus and holding the tomb of Saint Petronilla.

The difference is physical. The route opens out of a tunnel into a nave with columns and an apse, and the change of scale is what visitors remember. It is the single best argument for choosing Domitilla over the Appian Way pair if you are only going into one catacomb.

The oldest and the largest

Dated from about 120 AD, Domitilla predates the organised cemetery at San Callisto and runs to roughly twenty kilometres of galleries on several levels — the largest underground cemetery in the city. The name comes from Flavia Domitilla, a member of the imperial family whose land the burials began on.

What survives on the walls is early Christian symbol-language rather than developed iconography: the fish, the anchor, the good shepherd. Some of it predates any settled Christian art anywhere.

Which catacomb to pick

The five open to the public cost the same and are all guided-only. They differ in what they hold and, practically, in what day they shut.

The twenty-minute rule

Domitilla publishes something the other catacombs do not: the last guided visit of each half-day starts twenty minutes before closing. In practice that means the final morning tour leaves at 11:40 and the final afternoon tour at 16:40, and arriving at 16:50 gets you nothing.

Booking is by phone on 06 5110342 or through the site's own form, and adds €2 to the ticket. It is not obligatory, but the guided groups form as visitors arrive, so a reservation is worth having in the afternoon.

Getting there

Domitilla sits on Via delle Sette Chiese, west of the Appian Way proper. Bus 218 from San Giovanni on Metro A drops you at Fosse Ardeatine, a short walk away; the same stop serves the walk down to San Callisto and San Sebastiano if you want two catacombs in a morning.

That combination only works on the right day. Domitilla shuts Tuesday, San Callisto Wednesday and San Sebastiano Monday, so Thursday to Sunday is the window where all three are open. The full table.
