Appian Way Golf Cart Tour with Roman Catacombs Entry

Out of the centre

The cart leaves from Via Monterone 19, a short street shaped like an L beside Via di Torre Argentina, a few minutes from the Pantheon. The first stops are the viewpoint over the Circus Maximus and the Baths of Caracalla — both photo stops with commentary rather than entries, which is the right call: Caracalla deserves its own morning.

From there the route joins the Via Appia Antica, opened in 312 BC and the most important road of the Republic. Riding it is the part reviewers write about. One from September 2026: "This is 10 out of 10 the best way to see the sites of Rome. Golf cart for the win."

Thirty minutes underground

The catacomb stop is a 30-minute guided walk with entry included. The listing calls it "Catacombs of Rome" without naming one, which — as with every daily catacomb operator — is the Rome underground closing days at work.

Thirty minutes matches the standard visit length at St. Callixtus, where tours leave every half hour and run about forty minutes. If you want longer underground, the two-hour English tour at Domitilla is the one; this tour's underground is a chapter, not the book.

The way back

Returning, the route passes the Tomb of Cecilia Metella — a drum of travertine that later became a fortress — the Aurelian Walls, and the Pyramid of Cestius, a Roman magistrate's tomb built when Egypt was fashionable. All are photo stops from the cart, back to Via Monterone.

How the carts work

Seven seats per vehicle and a maximum of two vehicles, so fourteen people at most. The carts travel together like connected carriages and everyone hears the same guide through an earpiece — which is how a cart tour manages to be a guided tour on a road with traffic. People booking together may occasionally be split between the two carts.

Hotel pickup is not included and there is no drop-off elsewhere: it starts and finishes at the office.

Sixteen degrees and humid

This listing states something no other tour page here bothers to: "The temperature inside the catacombs is around 16 °C / 61 °F with high humidity, so please dress accordingly." It also warns that the catacomb requires walking on uneven ground and climbing steep stairs.

That is the honest picture of underground Rome and it applies to every catacomb, not just this tour's. Cool and damp, not cold; and after twenty minutes standing still it reads as chilly even in July. Bring a layer. More on conditions site by site.

Shade, or the lack of it

The cart is open. The Appian Way has umbrella pines but long unshaded stretches, and there is almost nowhere to buy water once you are past San Sebastiano — hence the bottle in the inclusion list. In July and August, book the earliest slot the operator sells.
