The underground beneath it is where the machinery lived: the corridors that held animals and scenery, the lift shafts that raised them, the staging area that made the spectacle possible. The operator's directions are specific: head to the terrace above the Colosseo metro station, look for the footbridge, cross it, then walk up the road on the left-hand side and check in. Via della Polveriera 13 is the address. Allow more time than the map suggests — the area around the Colosseum at peak hours is slow going on foot.

Is any of it worth it on a first visit

If it is your first day in Rome and money is finite, the honest answer is no: the 3-in-1 at $93 gives you the Forum, the Palatine and one of the two special-access levels, and a newcomer gets more from breadth than from the basement. This tour is for the return visitor who has done the stands and wants the parts that were roped off.

And if what you actually want is an underground that feels underground, that is the catacombs and the Domus Aurea, not the hypogeum — which is open to the sky in places and hot in summer.
